Fuel Economy Myths

Avoid the below methods, which may actually do more harm than good.

When it comes to saving money on gas, there is no shortage of tips and tricks – and most of them are worth trying. However, there are also a number of myths that are downright untrue, and can end up costing you money, instead of saving it. Beware of these costly fuel economy myths.

Use premium gas. There is no evidence to suggest that premium gas improves fuel efficiency. Premium gas usually has additives that offer some perks, but improved fuel economy is not one of them. Although some additives claim to improve fuel efficiency, the EPA has yet to find conclusive evidence that this is true.

Choose a smaller car. This may have been true in years past, but small cars are not necessarily more efficient than their larger counterparts thanks to improved powertrain technology and use of lightweight materials. What really matters is how the vehicle is designed, the powertrain technology, and the materials used.

Choose a manual transmission. Once again, this was true in the past, but is no longer valid. Enhancements in transmission technology allow for more efficient, smoother automatic shifting and the use of more gears.
